One of the most transformative experiences in my life was when I was very young and noticed the differences in how women were treated in my Mennonite community compared to what I observed during a visit to India. Growing up in a Mennonite community, I witnessed firsthand the traditional gender roles that often limited women’s opportunities and voices of my mother, grandmothers and aunts. Women were expected to quietly,  to specific roles within the household and community,  prioritizing the needs and decisions of men.

Adding to this, I was married to an Indian man for 30 years and lived with extended family in our home. This immersion in their culture brought many lessons and challenges.

I visited India in 1992 for 3 months, with my husband and two children for 2 weddings of family members. I saw struggles and the resilience of women in a different culture, The contrast between the two environments were very different, but much alike with family and faith being very important and witnessed the gender inequality of women and girls there and in my own family.  In India, I encountered women who, despite facing significant societal and economic challenges, demonstrated incredible strength and determination to improve their lives and the lives of those around them.

As a woman and mother, the dynamics of family life within this cultural dynamics was incredibly hard. The experience taught me a great deal about resilience, adaptability, and the complexities of familial relationships. Ultimately, this chapter of my life ended in divorce, but it left me with profound insights and a deeper understanding of myself and my values.

I never want my daughter, granddaughter, or other women to go through the insecurity, trauma, and issues related to interracial marriage, faith, and family that I experienced. This is why I am here, to share my story, advocate for change, and support women in their journeys.

Throughout my journey, I have come to appreciate and respect the lessons, traditions, and religions of others. It is essential to be accepting and respectful without hurting, using, or taking advantage of others. Enjoying other people’s celebrations and learning from each other is one of the best parts of life. By embracing diversity, we enrich our own lives and foster a more inclusive and compassionate world.

My healing journey has been deeply transformative. Through meditation and writing, I have navigated my chrysalis journey, emerging stronger and more self-aware. These practices have not only helped me heal but have also given me a heart to support others on their paths. Sharing my experiences and insights through coaching and writing has become a way to empower others to find their strength and resilience.

I have also learned many wonderful things from both Indian and Mennonite cultures. Cooking Indian dishes and enjoying their vibrant festivals have become cherished parts of my life. These cultural experiences have enriched me and will forever be a part of who I am.

These experiences ignited a fire within me to challenge the status quo and advocate for gender equality. I realized that empowering myself and others was not just a personal journey but a collective responsibility. As a feminist, I believe in the importance of being a voice for the voiceless. Advocating for equal opportunities, challenging discriminatory practices, and supporting women’s rights to education, employment, and personal autonomy.

Empowerment, to me, is about providing women with the tools, resources, and support they need to thrive. It’s about creating spaces where women’s voices are heard and valued, and where they can lead with confidence and strength. My experiences have taught me that true empowerment comes from within, but it also requires a supportive and equitable environment.

By sharing my story and advocating for change, I hope to inspire others to recognize their own power and potential. Together, we can create a world where women are not only seen and heard but are also celebrated for their contributions and leadership. This journey of empowerment is ongoing, and it is one that I am committed to pursuing with passion and dedication.
